Body Dysmorphic Disorder

It doesn’t take much effort to recognize that unfair and impossible beauty standards are pervasive in US culture. Such a powerful influence can lead us to a distorted sense of perfection. Most of struggle to varying extents with some aspects of our appearance—our crooked nose, gap-toothed smiles, blemished skin. While these daily struggles are not particularly significant for most, for others they can be debilitating—obsessively controlling nearly every element of life.

The inability to live an ordinary life without being plagued by obsessions of self-image might point to a mental health disorder known as Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). According to the Mayo Clinic, Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a “chronic mental illness” in which incessant concerns about minor or imagined flaws in your appearance dominate your thoughts. The expression of Body Dysmorphic Disorder can get so severe that those suffering may isolate themselves, avoiding any social situation and even family or friends for fear of them recognizing their flaws. Sometimes they may even seek extreme actions such as plastic surgery or other measures in an effort to control their perceived imperfections, often with very limited success.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder can be especially complicated due to the fact that it can often lead to severe depression and suicidal thoughts. Being in a position to recognize the symptoms may enable those suffering to seek treatment. BDD sufferers usually perform some kind of a compulsive or repetitive behavior to hide or fix their perceived flaws, these may include among the following:

  • Excessive exercise
  • Excessive grooming
  • Constantly comparing their appearances to others
  • Constantly checking mirrors
  • Seeking drastic surgery
  • Camouflaging with makeup, hair, hats and other accessories.

Like many other mental illnesses, there is no definitive cure for Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Nevertheless, clinical research has indicated that the effective blend of treatments may serve to manage the complications and symptoms stemming from BDD. According to the the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, the most common and effective treatments include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)—a form of psychotherapy—and the appropriate medications when deemed medically appropriate. In fact, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) works to develop and implement patterns of behavior to more sufficiently educate yourself, control thoughts and, above all, teach yourself healthy behaviors for overcoming urges and rituals. The most current and well-established research also points to brain chemistry as an important factor in the development of BDD. Due to the fact that BDD has been linked to Serotonin-related problems, psychiatric medications known as Selective Serotonin Reputake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and other anti-depressants may help regulate obsessive and repetitive behaviors.

At Resilience Treatment Center in Los Angeles, California, our team of multidisciplinary clinicians construct highly-individualized treatment plans that integrate a blend of evidence-based therapies. • As a critical element of Resilience’s approach to treatment, integrating individual and group psychotherapy modalities into our treatment plan is the cornerstone of our therapeutic program. Additionally, clients are offered weekly individualized family therapy, and an extensive range of group therapy sessions that include: healthy relationships, seeking safety, relapse prevention, psychodrama and process groups among many others.
  • Resilience also seeks to provide clients with experiential therapy designed to widen horizons, foster healthy relationships and, above all, build emotional resilience.
