TREATMENT FOR PTSD
Resilience Treatment Center’s PTSD program – one of Southern California’s acclaimed and clinically advanced post-traumatic stress disorder recovery solutions.
“The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it.” — RAFIKI (“The Lion King”)
Feeling afraid is natural. In fact, humans have evolved to use fear as a tool to help us escape danger. Fear triggers instinctive changes in the body to defend against this danger or possibly even avoid it. This response, known as “flight-or-fight”, is a calculated response meant to protect a person from harm. With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), however, this instinctive cue is changed or damaged. Instead of responding to an existing threat, people who have PTSD may feel stressed or frightened even when they’re no longer in danger.
The source of PTSD is often linked to a terrifying ordeal involving physical or the threat of physical harm, as is so often seen, sor instance, with military personnel returning from war zones. Being able to effectively process all of the trauma associated with such an event can overwhelm the brain’s system for processing trauma, often creating reactions of flashbacks, bad dreams, frightening thoughts, increased sensitivity, jumpiness and trouble sleeping. When these issues do not go away—or if they get worse—if they hinder your ability to go about your daily life, attend school, do our job at work, raise your children, hang with friends or simply become obstacles to performing your daily tasks—treatment for PTSD may be beneficial.

Signs and Symptoms
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the symptoms associated with PTSD can be grouped into three general categories: re-experiencing symptoms, avoidance symptoms and hyper-arousal symptoms. On a clinical level, a diagnosis of PTSD entails at least a full month of experiencing at least one re-experiencing symptom, at least three avoidance symptoms and at least two hyper-arousal symptoms. However, for the layperson, any single one of these experiences is enough to warrant attention.
